Description

ATEX INDUSTRIAL DUST FILTERS

Many industrial processes generate dust that can become explosive in the air – agricultural products, food raw materials, wood, metals and plastics are just some of the materials whose dust is potentially explosive.

Industrial dust filters in ATEX-certified versions are a must-have solution for companies seeking to ensure worker safety and comply with the strict requirements of European Union directives. Proper dust filtration and explosion risk management are an integral part of safe operations.

Most of our dust filtration units can be equipped with fire and explosion protection for use with explosive dusts and for installation in potentially explosive environments complying with ATEX requirements.

Categories of ATEX filtration equipment

Filtration units for work with potentially explosive dusts fall into four categories:

  • Grounded unit of unreinforced design – a standard filter unit with grounding, designed for environments where safety requirements require avoiding potential sources of fire.

  • Reinforced design – for use with explosive dusts. The design is robust enough to contain the dust explosion inside the unit. All internal components are ATEX compliant. Supplied with blast wave release panels, flame arresting valves or explosion arresting devices. If installed in a non-combustible environment – no ATEX marking required.

  • ATEX certified – for installation in potentially explosive atmospheres. All external components are designed for use in explosive atmospheres, but the filtered dust is not explosive.

  • ATEX-certified unit with a reinforced design – designed for use with potentially explosive dusts as well as for installation in explosive environments. ATEX marking applies to external components only.

Donaldson explosion and fire protection solutions

Donaldson ATEX industrial dust filters can be equipped with explosion and fire protection components to provide comprehensive protection for your dust filtration system:

  • Blast Wave Release Panels – mechanical release of blast energy into a safe area

  • Flameless ventingflame arresting valves to release the blast wave inside the room

  • Chemical blast suppression – chemical inhibitors activated within milliseconds, stopping the explosion in its infancy

  • Explosion-proof valves – backflow or shut-off valves to prevent the spread of fire through ducts

  • Anti-static filter elements – designed to eliminate the build-up of static charge in the filter elements

  • Earthing – all system components are earthed to prevent static discharges

Examples of explosive dust

Explosive dusts can be generated in many industries – especially in processes that generate dusts of organic origin, dusts from special metals, and some dusts from the production of chemicals or plastics.

  • Agriculture and food – cereals, flour, sugar, starch, cocoa, coffee

  • Wood processing – wood flour, sawdust

  • Metalworking – aluminium, magnesium, zinc, iron carbonyl

  • Chemical industry – sulphuric acid salts, organic chemicals

  • Plastics and polymers – epoxy resins, polypropylenes
